About Cori

Carlsbad deserves proactive leadership that is committed to putting our residents first, that centers our residents' voices and quality-of-life in every decision made, with a strong, unifying vision for Carlsbad that is rooted in our past, while looking forward to our future.

Over the last year, I have served as your representative to: the League of California Cities, the Buena Vista Lagoon JPC, the SANDAG Regional Planning Committee (alt), and the SANDAG Shoreline Working Group (primary). I have a passion for data-driven decision-making, policy, legislation, and most importantly, working alongside our residents to rebuild the public's trust in government.

I am a California native and have lived in North County San Diego for nearly 30 years. Carlsbad has been my home for the last 12 years. I am in love with Carlsbad, with our community, with the character and graciousness of our residents, and with the kindness we exhibit toward each other and our neighbors in times of need (as in the recent Lilac Fires). It is an honor and a gift to be able to walk beside you during these times, Carlsbad.

While I am most widely known as a 3-time world-champion surfer, over the last 11 years I redirected my energy into effecting both local and global change as a human rights and environmental justice advocate.

Before running for elected office, I founded a small, local non-profit, called The Inspire Initiative, to empower leadership in women and girls as they navigate the complex social, political, and business environments women so often come into contact with in the world. The ocean provides a unique medium through which to develop self-efficacy, resiliency, and courage in environments during times of intense flux. I have been a committed student of the lessons of the ocean and found myself wanting to embolden, encourage, and uplift others using the platform I had as a world champion surfer.

The local and global experience I have gained over the last 10 years has led to my writing being published by The Guardian, The
Surfer's Journal, and most recently, in The Critical Surf Studies Reader, published by Duke University Press that "brings together eighteen interdisciplinary essays that explore surfing's history and development as a practice embedded in complex and sometimes oppositional social, political, economic, and cultural relations." You can read my contributor bio here.

In addition, in 2014, I co-founded The Institute for Women Surfers, "a grassroots educational initiative in the Public Humanities that brings together women surfers, activists, artists, business owners, and educators, to create spaces of peer teaching, learning, and mutual aid." This highlights an important aspect of how I work in the world. We are now in an era when we need collaborative, creative, problem-solving and this requires a broad diversity of minds, backgrounds, ideologies, interests, and experiences at the table.

In 2015, I was involved with the "No on Measure A" effort that ensured the people of Carlsbad had a vote on a proposed 600,000 square foot mall on the shores of the Agua Hedionda Lagoon. Since being elected, I continue to center the voice and the will of the people in my decision-making from the dais.

I continue to hear from our residents that they want leadership that will fight for them, their quality-of-life, their interests, and leadership that will above all, strive to further support and develop the well-informed and politically empowered community that I have seen exemplified in Carlsbad, and that remains the most powerful force in our democracy.

As your Mayor, I will remain committed to transparency; the meaningful engagement of our residents; intelligent, guided growth; ensuring a sustainability that is centered on your quality-of-life; and respecting the will and diverse voices of our residents.

The wisdom of the people of Carlsbad has led us to where we are today (our Growth Management Plan, Proposition D, our incorporation as a City...). It is my intention to further incorporate YOUR wisdom, Carlsbad, to ensure a future we are proud to deliver to our children and grandchildren.

I look forward to continuing to serve you, Carlsbad, and I hope I can count on your support in November, 2018!

Kindly,

Cori Schumacher
